What is it?

The package comes in 4 items – the diffuser holder and 3 colors (white, orange and blue). To setup, connect one of the color diffuser to the holder and place it in your camera flash hotshoe. That’s it. Is that simple.

How is the quality

I used it on my Canon 60D and was very happy with the result (more on the photos outcome later). The holder and diffuser is very solid.

Lxpodisc Version 1.0

Construction

The Expodisc is used in place of a white card to set manual white balance. It looks like a fat filter with a fluorescent light fixture diffuser on top and white plastic on the bottom. It costs about USD120.

You don't photograph through it. You put it over your lens and put your camera in the same position as your subject. Point the camera back to your shooting position. Set the camera's white balance while it measures the same light that will fall on the subject.

Once set, put away the Expodisc and shoot from your original position. You don't shoot through the Expodisc, except to set the WB.

My Lxpodisc

With the concept above and plan to DIY my own ExpoDisc. Here are the materials needed for LxpoDisc:

a. White paper (80gram – 1 piece A4 size)

b. Ikea cupboard mat (SGD 5.00)

c. Cutter and cutting board

d. Compass, ruler, etc

e. Self-laminating sheet (SGD2.00 from Daisyo)

f. White glue

DIY steps

1. Draw the circle as per your filter size (in my case it was 72mm, so I create a 75mm circle)

2. Draw an outer circle of 85mm as the frame for the disc

3. Cut the cupboard mat to the size of the filter

4. Laminate the paper and cut the outer circle, glue the cupboard mat onto the inner circle

5. Bend the laminated paper to make a cap

The finished product should looks something like this:

How it works?

Canon camera setting only.

2. Take a picture and you should get a more constant greyish/whitish photo (look like need version 2.0)

Conclusion: mine is one step too dark, so need to add 2 stop to brighter the photo.

Conclusion: Will be working on version 2.0 and use lighter white paper.

Alienware MX11

Not sure how to start. This notebook is the replacement of my old gaming notebook Asus G2. To me is a downgrade as my G2 is a 17” gaming notebook but for my son is an upgrade as now he is mobile gamer

Why buy Alienware?
1. Asus G2 Bios/motherboard is dead and not sure how much to replace it.
2. Need an additional notebook for my son
3. New notebook must be more mobile then my current notebooks (OK… some call it desktop replacement)

So after searching for sometimes, I concluded that the replacement notebook will be Alienware MX11 or MX15. I checked the Dell’s website for the latest promotions/offers and decided to get it for Christmas but Santa does know how to makes my dream comes true.

We when to Courts at Tempenis to get “other” electrical stuff and we found Alienware on display. This is where Santa came in. The hourly promotion for the set (just as we about to step out) was SGD 970 (original price was SGD 1890) and no one interested in it as everyone saying that the set to heavy for netbook, must be demo set, blah, blah, blah. So I grab it and found it is a new set.

Unboxing MX11
The box was heavy for a netbook (MX11 is 11” notebook but in the size of 13”). The packaging was nicely design, when you open it you greeted by some alien’s language:

And this is not the set, just a box for cables, CD and other reading documents. The actual set was much deeper under:

Me and my thinkTANK

I have decided that my Lowepro CompuTrekker Plus AW is just too bulky to carry around for day-to-day usage, plus I do not have that many lens left after the trade-in of my old camera.

I start searching for a new camera bag and my requirements for the new bag:

a. must able to fit in my Dell Vostro 13 (13” notebook but with a length of 14”)
b. able to accommodate my iPad and other accessories
c. future expansion such as able to add bottle/lens holder

So after searching thru various shops and online, I found thinkTank. I have to admit that the built quality of the bag is almost identical to Tumi or Victorinox, strong, rugged and can withstand my daily usage (abuse).

The model I bought was thinkTANK Urban Disguise 35 V2.0

The specification:

Weight (empty): 1400 grams
Dimension: 10” L x 13.25” H x 6” D

In short is heavier and smaller than my Targus (the backpack on the left). This bag is like Swiss army knife for bag, lots of compartments:

a. The back/notebook compartment can fit my notebook and ipad

b. Camera compartment can fit my Canon 60D with Tamron 18-270mm lens, plus both side that can fit my Joby SLR and Canon EF-S 10-22mm USM.

c. The front notebook compartment can fits a 10” notebook or iPad

After months of consideration between Canon 7D and 60D, I finally decided to go for the Canon 60D (more review on that later).

Before I go out and get the new body, I need to know what am I going to do with my old Canon body, already in my collections are 2 full-frame body (one Canon and the other Minolta – belongs to my wife) and old lens.

I bought the Canon 300D when it was first launched, in US it was call the Canon Rebel and was one of the first digital SLR. This body already about 8 years old. I used it for all my “rugged” travel (to extreme cold winters to normal tropical environment).

After long consideration, I decided to trade in the body plus some of my old lens for Canon 60D plus an all-in-one lens (more on the lens later).

Buying Time or Technology

On the 23:59:59 of 2009, my Seiko Perpetual Calendar was working fine. It can tells me accurate date and time but at the stroke of midnight 00:00:00 of 2010, the date refused to change to 1st Jan and the watch was officially “expired”. I was very happy with my Seiko as it works on very cold environment and been with me since I start working in Singapore.

Well, when I purchased the watch (years ago), I knew on the midnight of 2009, the watch will refuse to work. Therefore I already planning for a replacement watch as early as June 2009. Sort like Y2K planning. However after searching high and low, I still unable to get the watch I like/love.

However, after a few tweaking, my trusted Seiko should be working till next leap year (same year as the summer Olympics). That make me wonder, am I buying a watch to tell date/time (any watches) or a masterpiece (such as Rolex) or a fashion/utility (designer watch). To tell date/time, we do not need a watch as most of us already carrying it with them, it is call mobile phone, I won’t talk about designer watch as I will not look into these category as it will not be appealing to me.

So left with masterpiece, I am not talking about Rolexes, Tags, etc. Is about the technology of the watch. Recently the watch makers are creating some very advance technology watches. Lets go thru them:

a. Perpetual Calendar: The latest perpetual watch not only tell the correct date (I think is till someway around 2050), time, it also tells the accurate moon phase, day of week, leap years and some more expensive also shows the year (centuries).

b. Eco drive, Kinetics, Solar, etc: The watch that can last forever. With these Japanese technologies, the watches basically will work forever as no need to change batteries, all it need were sunlight, movement or both.

c. Radio Controlled: The watch will synchronized by a time code bit stream transmitted by a radio transmitter such as atomic clock (something like a GPS). The watch will set the time to US time if you fly to USA, and back to China time, if you back to China, etc.

d. Multi functions watch such as Altimeter, Chonography, etc.

After going through all the European and Japanese watches, I shortlist to a few watches (actually only 2):

1. Citizen Calibre H610

This watch is a masterpiece. It basically has all the new technologies built into the watch and is a mechanical watch. It will last forever as the Eco drive will power it as long as there is lights. Also it will change time according to the radio controlled features, very good for travellers.

2. Tissot T-Touch

This is a much simpler watch without the auto/self powering system, no radio controlled but comes with touch screen. You can activate the watch functions by touching the glass.

After much self debate (my left brain vs my right brain), I finally bought the Tissot T-Touch. The model I bought was Tissot T-Touch Expert comes with more features.

Me and iPad

I bought iPad on the first day of launching in Singapore. How long did I queue for it.... Almost 2 hours.
Why I need iPad? Well, I always like tablet pc especially the HP and Fujitsu, but recent tablet such as from Kohjisha was disappointed, so when Apple announced the launch of Apple, I was excited and I knew I wanted to at least try one. However, I do not wished to fall into the trap of excellent advertisement. I was lucky as my boss got a set from US a couple of weeks after it launched and after playing it for a couple if minutes, my mind and heart concluded that this is the tablet that I needed.
After searching high and low at those parallel importers in Singapore and Hongkong, they do not carry or stock the model I wanted - 64gb wifi and even the 32gb is too expansive.
So I purchased it on the launching day. Mine is 64gb wifi and got I for less than the published price (some discount for queuing)
What I used the iPad for?
A. Keynotes - PowerPoint style presentation and still learning how to use it. So far created one presentation and I quite love it but the learning curve is longer than I expected. One problem was that the files save is keynote/iWork format and PDF, so PPT files need to be converted.
B. Numbers - Spreadsheet for iPad and same as keynotes, need to understand the concept and convert xls into numbers/iWork format.
C. Photo frame - convert ipad into photo frame with music
D. iBook - this is my favorite apps. It can open epub and PDF file. Convert some of my magazine into PDF and now I can bring all my magazine and my tintin collection with me. Next stop convert all my Asterix and Obelix series :)
E. Photo editing - no time yet, but tried some of the apps and thing this will be useful for all my photos
G. Games - no so much into the gaming but my son loves it
H. Movie - DVD converted to mpeg4 was great on iPad but divx movies converted to mpeg4 movies were horrible, look like need to reconvert all my DVD again :(
I. Internet and web TV - this is also great when I need to read some news and surf online.
J. Email - another great stuff on iPad
K. Organizer - great tool to use as diary/organizer. The apps used was Pocket Informant. It can link to outlook/google for calendar. Nice todo screen.
Well that after a month of iPad usage. Next, will be which hardware to buy, guess the answer is simple: camera connectivity kit. Is actually put a USB connector for iPad.
Other useful hardware is the keyboard and docking station.
Will update hardware review after I tested/bought it.

My xperia X2

Pro: Built quality is good, good camera, very clear screen
Con:Bad firmware
After using about a month (after major operations - Sony Ericsson changed the almost everything except the cover), now I can finally review the Sony Ericsson.
Hardware
The built quality is very good. The back is made of metal (real metal not those plastic stimulated metal), comes with a stylus 4GB SD card, a USB mini (most phone using this format now -- to compete with iphone) and a 8.1Mbps camera. The charger is very mobile. Once you flip open the keyboard was great to type (might be a little small for bigger size people). The screen is 480x800 (vertical) or 800x400 (horizontal) or 3.2" screen size.
Also comes with the standard 3.5mm headphone jack (moving away from Sony connector). The SD card can be access by opening the metal back cover.

Built in the hardware are GPS, Wifi, bluetooth and all band. Battery life is about 18 hours, may able to last 24 hours if you turn off HSPDA.
Note: My first X2 was working perfectly except that the RAM in certain part of the hardware was "dead" so they change the motherboard and change my imei.
Software
One word -- CRAP. Not sure is the hardware compatible issue or just crap.
First the auto-changing panels (able to display up to 9 panels). Some panels just too difficult to understand, example the Growing Panel

The other panels are SPB Mobile Shell, Tileware, Driving (with GPS), CNN, Youtube, etc. I end up only using SPB Mobileshell.
Camera is like the very basic Sony Cybershot - touch focus and with geo-tagging. Music is like a basic Sony MP3 walkman. The sound from the speakers is actually very clear and loud (much better than the Omnia - someone always complaints that he cannot hear me when I called him from my Omnia, hmmm.... actuall all the recipients in this email are Omnia)
SMS, Email, MMS -- great when using the keyboard. When using the phone as a modem with a PC, the speed was fast enough for me to check football scores and read news. When pairing Bluetooth device, just like any other phone search and key in the pin code to confirm (Omnia is one step ahead, they insert in most major pin code into it, you just need to pair and need not key in the pin code)
Now why the software is CRAP...... Sony Ericsson already upgrade the firmware with the latest version known as MR1 (or Windows Mobile 6.5.1) and here is the items that is upgraded/enhanced:

Here’s a list of highlights:
- MR1 is built on a new core platform release from Microsoft including a newer version of IE6
- Stability improvements are everywhere with focus on SlideView, Panel manager and TileWave
- Performance improvements focused on rotation and touch performance, the camera, web browsing, the software keyboard and audio streaming
- New features are added like FM radio, Video calling, Auto-lock and Fast GPS which allows for a faster first fix to the GPS signal
- SlideView 2.0 gives better usability throughout with a fresh design; and new actions are build in like new/reply/delete/edit capabilities in messaging and calendar. Music scrolling/searching and the mini-player have also been enhanced
- The new dialer took a big step forward with four easy buttons giving easy access to the dial-pad, favorites, call activity and contacts. We increased the target hit area in contacts for finger friendliness and added user friendly redial functionality
- Based on feedback from you, we really worked hard on the software keyboard (XT9) by improving speed and touch responsiveness

And they never/forgot mention that with the upgrade you will also:
a. lost the built in games (Experiment 13 and a racing game -- forgot the name)
b. all previous games from Sony Ericsson Playnow is now not playable
c. the phone will auto shutdown when the phone feels like it like to take a rest (so please continue to check your phone to make sure is not shutdown)
d. phone refuse to let you answer calls from your wife (guess the phone is jealous of iphone). Not sure why, sometimes when my wife or other iphone users call me, my phone just hang when I answer the call
e. at least once a week, you need to shut down and remove the battery to clear any nightmare/bad dream that the phone has during the sleep (auto shutdown), else most features thing won't work, actually the phone just hang
f. My phone now speaks German to me. My purchase game Real Football refuse to speak in English, must be preparing me for Bundesliga as Starhub will no longer has the rights to English Football.
The good news after all this was that I can received SMS and I get direct access to Singapore Xperia support team. Those guys are great and friendly even after all the calls they received from me, hmmm.... now they greet me by my name. I guess I am making my name in the Sony Ericsson office too.
Conclusion
I guess I need to correct my statement... if you need a smartphone, don't go near Sony Ericsson. I heard they have the same problems with Aino and Satio too.
Don't get me wrong, my experience with Sony Ericsson was very good (I still love my P800 - still in my drawer) but after the Xperia, I might go back to my first phone Motorola (the huge water bottle phone - at least it works)

Aztech HW550-3G

I bought Aztech HW550 (on 3^rd Nov) to replace by old Netgear wireless router (I think is about 5 years ago). The Aztech HW550-3G router is one of the newest entrant to the market with supporting feature such as the USB storage and printer sharing making it a basic NAS functionality; and of course, pairing of an external 3G modem, allowing a working broadband connection anywhere.

The box consists of the wireless router (Is N), network cable, simple installation guide, CD (useless only user guide) and a huge adapter (about half the size of the router, doesn’t make sense as the adapter is too huge to carry around).

Setup

Setup is easy; just connect it to your broadband and power. Did not try the mobile broadband (since I do not have any).

Once turn on, connect the LAN cable to your PC and type in the address and you on:

Once you connect in the USB hard disk, you will able to share it. Once shared, you will able to access it on any PC/notebook in the network via the Samba server

The good:
Great performance (wan-lan, wlan)
Neat web interface, high-usability for even the beginners.
Amazingly cheap price; $70++

SPB Mobile Shell 3.5

I been using SPB Mobile Shell 2.0 since I got my Omnia and now is upgraded to version 3.5 by SPB Software.

So what so nice about version 3.5? Installation is easy but you need to have at least 12MB of RAM to install the program.

After installation you have 2 types of screen:

a. Professional

b. Lifestyle

The cool thing about version 3.5 is the widgets, so no need to use 3rd party widgets. The widgets are:

a. Email (like like cards, you flip thru the emails)

b. SMS (like like cards, you flip thru the sms)

Here a little about Windows Mobile 6.5, according to Microsoft, Omnia 2 can be upgraded. So hopefully, Samsung opens it to Omnia series too :)

Geo tagging photos

To geotagging your photos you need the following:

a. Camera

b. GPS

c. Software that can edit the photo’s EXIF data

Unless you have a camera with GPS built in. (like Omnia or most phone with GPS – Nokia N97, etc)

For me, I have a Sony GPS CS1 (I think Sony not producing it anymore), this is a very small and handy GPS.

You can store up to 7 days of data in the GPS. All you need is just on it and let it track your journey. Once you back from your trip, you upload both the photos and the GPS data into your computer. The Sony software will then tag the photos sync the photo date/time with the GPS data and tag it into the photo’s EXIF.

You remember to change your camera date/time to the time zone of the place the photos are taken, example if you travel to UK, you must change the UK time zone, else the date/time of the photos will not sync with the GPS date/time. The GPS date/time is obtained from the GPS so it will always use the location time zone (no setting required).

Second methods, is much simpler, if you have those phone with GPS, you can turn on the geotagging. The GPS will be turn on and each photo taken will be tag with the current location.

Once you have all the photos tag, you can use Google Earth/Map to see your GPS tracks and photos. The

a. Using Photoshop Elements 5 and above. You load up the maps in Photoshop and link it to your photos. This method do not required any GPS

b. Using www.gpsed.com similar to Photoshop but you need a GPS, after you upload the tracks to the website, you can also upload the photos and link it to the location.

Me and Ipod

I got myself a second hand ipod classic 120GB for RM30 and that is the bargain I cannot resist. I have been toying with the ipod ideas since end of 2008 and now I finally got it.

The device:

About the same size of my Omnia and nothing much to talk about as most people already know about ipod.

The software:

I guess I really don’t like it that much as can only limited audio format such as AAC or MP3, the Apple fanatic might argue that this is the best and purest audio format, what about WMA?

The WMA can get the album arts for most of my CD whereas the iTunes almost returns non album arts.

My comments:

The ipod by itself is really bad, but with the help of Motorola D650 (Bluetooth dongle) for my Motorola S9

Now that is different story. I can listen to MP3 via the ipod and answer my phone (while pausing the songs) using my Omnia.

Why do I need to buy an ipod?

Well…. Asked my car. The only MP3 adapter that my car stereo accepts is meant for ipod. So now I am thinking to change the car stereo so that I do not need adapter (maybe a Bluetooth car stereo). Then I can retire the ipod.

Omnia – End of life soon?

Is been a long time since I update on regarding Omnia.

Well, first on the Omnia. Since Omnia II is already in the market and the Windows Mobile 6.5 is also coming out, , I guess our Omnia is coming to end-of-life as Samsung not updating the firmware (the last update is DZIA5) .

Well in the past one year with Omnia is like having a new phone after every firmware update and with SPB Mobile Shell, my Omnia is more finger friendly and I hardly uses the Stylus. I also change the casing to those skin type from CAPDASE (www.capdase.com).

So far I have added many apps into my omnia:

and the following are the most apps are:

S2U2 – This is the program that was first release even iphone was release and the author almost got sued for it. Is lock your phone and to unlock, just slide (like iphone). The latest version can also change the background picture. It shows the time, appointment, emails, etc too. And when incoming phone, just slide to answer.

S2P – I have stop using the windows media player or the touch player as both very limited and restricted. At first glance it looks like iPhone media player and you right.

It can play by directory or by genre or artist, etc. Best of all is finger friendly and activated when my Bluetooth headset is on. When I off my headset, the apps terminate itself.

GPSed – This is like those tracking GPS we installed into the truck and is free. The data is transmitted to www.gpsed.com where you can track the device. You can also add photos, etc.

mFlash – This is Omnia exclusive tools that make full use of the LED flash of the camera. With it you can use it as a flash, Send SOS signal or strobe. You can also sent morse code(Transformer also using morse code too – never know when it will be useful).

mToolbox – This apps is actually makes up of various in one apps. The apps are:

Water level – good for check the levelness of your tripod

Ruler – hmm…. Just a ruler, in case you need to measure something about 3.5” size J

Light Sensor – good for photography too

Shock Sensor – in case you want to measure the level of shock in your car J

Where is – This is the GPS apps that come with compass and can store location of the place you wanted to go, the distance remaining, the traveling speed, etc

CurrencyConv – This is a simple currency conversion program. It can auto update the rates from the net.

Google Maps – This is the new Google Maps with layer, meaning you can now go underground to look at the transit lines (MRT lines, etc), plus you can also use it to replace the GPS software.

Facebook – This is the facebook apps that link facebook to your Omnia. Great stuff if you a fan of facebook, get all the facebook email, contact, etc.

Skyfire – Another browser that I like as it can open any website without limitation of being PDA. Some website refuse to allow access such as those banking site and you can also put all the news feed into one page (no need to use Avantgo – guess Avantgo is died by now)

Opera Mobile 9.7 Beta – Even is beta is still better and more responsive than the Opera that comes with the firmware

Sun’n’Moon – This apps help me track the phases of the moon as I am planning for my moon photography in future J Hmmm…. Full moon in a couple of days time, must get the camera ready.

Off course, I also have the Phone Log, which sits in the background and log all the phone calls, smses and mmses that I send and the information is log into m Outlook.

What is it for?

Phonelog is a simple program that logs all call (placed, missed, answered) and sms to outlook calendar. It records the total time spent on the call, etc.

Once started, you can basically forget it. It takes up very limited memory, so no worries.

At Outlook Calendar, you can then categorized it to work/personal (by color coding):

Samsung Omnia (DZIA5) – Part two

Well is almost one week of using and here is the second part of the review:

GPS

The GPS can detect the satellite almost immediately (about 3 to 5 second) . After checking at the setting:

The XTRA setting?? My little guess work… Omnia will download the satellite data from the Internet (as said in the setting) :) The most important fact to know it that it works and can detect the signal extremely fast as compare to when I first have the phone (almost a year ago).

I tried going for a drive with the “Enhanced GPS” disabled and after 10 minutes of drive still unable to fix onto any signal. When I turn on the enhanced mode, the signal almost immediately lock on. This is good if you turn on the geo-tagging in the camera more (more on that later….)

The problems with un-assisted GPS in jungle (real or concrete) is that there too many obstructions, such as in urban environment, the satellite signals bounce off buildings which confuse the receiver and prevents lock and error in timing measurement. The assisted mode, Omnia will download the latest satellite information about the conditions in the vicinity of the phone allowing better time measurements and more accurate positioning as well as higher signal to noise ratios.

Volume control

The new volume control is like those manual fan speed control. you turn the dial to volume level you wanted. Cool.

Game: Asphalt 4

This is a car racing game and you control the car by turn your Omnia or in short your Omnia is your steering wheel of the car. You can also use the touch screen mode, that is touch left edge of Omnia to turn left and to turn right, touch on the right edge.

Other

The other reason why the new ROM is larger than the previous version is that it include some movies and songs (it formatted your storage to put in all the new software, movies and songs).

The Tutorial basically gives you a simple guide/tour on how to use your OMNIA. The other software is called Share pix.

It helps you to upload you photos to Facebook, Picasa, Flickr, etc.

Samsung Omnia (DZIA5) – Part One

I have been studying PMP for at least the last 4 weeks, so I need a break and back to my favorite pass time – that is, upgrading my phone ROM :D

Samsung Omnia i900 latest ROM update is DZIA5. I think I notice is that the file size is getting bigger. The last few ROM size is 109MB but this new ROM is 225MB. Wonder what they put inside. One thing for sure, each time I upgrade my ROM, the usable ROM getting smaller :(

Hmmm…… what was added into the new ROM? So the usual stuff. Backup my data and get all my most needed software ready. The phone is charged to 100% and I am ready to go.

Before I upgrade, I snapshot my old information:

Launch the program and follow the steps on your computer. Hmmm… there a a few more steps/files this time. The last time if my memory still served me correctly, it only upgrade about 3 to 4 files. But this time is 6 files and takes about 15 minutes and another 3 to 4 minutes for rebooting and restarting.

And after restarting, I snapshot it before I reinstall all my favorite program:

I put back all my software and data, total time about 30 minutes. So let’s explore what is news in this release.

NOTICE or WARNING: All the previous versions of upgrades didn’t touch the storage, memory which means whatever folders/files you had before the upgrade in the 8GB/16GB would remain after the upgrade. But the new version WIPES OUT all the files in the STORAGE MEMORY. Therefore REMEMBER to make a BACK UP of the files you have in storage memory before you proceed with the upgrade. Don’t said I did not warn you!

The first thing I notice is that there are new gadget for the widget:

- It has a setting icon, which allows you to choose the shortcuts you want to see in the widget bar, so that you can disable the icons you don’t frequently use.

- The widget also includes several new icons like stock ticker, Yahoo, Google search, weather etc.

So far so good. back to the main menu and more one-touch menu options (inside Favorite Settings)

Why take PMP?

This is not a tough question, but a very fair one. Here are some of the benefits that I think will get:

Earn more money
Able to runs projects more successfully
People will respect me for putting the extra efforts to get myself certified
Standardized the way I managed projects.

I have been think on how to put what I studies into more easy to understand explanation of PMBOK, so I decided to use pictures as one picture tells a thousand word. Why am i doing this? Because by teaching or coaching means I understand the topic. Should you notice any mistake in my part, do let me know.

Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification

After years of project management and now finally one of my customer insists that I must be PMP certified before I can continue with the project.

After reading and checking with friends, I decided to venture into PMP. To be PMP certified, you must have:

a. Minimum 3 years of unique non-overlapping project management or about 4,500 hours for bachelor’s degree or 7,500 hours for diploma holder.

b. You also need 35 contact hours of formal education (more on this later)

c. Apply online to obtain the PMP Credential at www.pmi.org

d. Once you have the credential, then you can attend the exam, which is multiple choice of 200 questions in 4 hours.

Back to the 35 contact hours, this is where I you have to attend classes on understanding the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge). After gone thru various schools, I finally decided to attend the 35 hours at ERC institute (www.erci.edu.sg) in Singapore.

Is it weekend (Saturday) classes and takes about 5 Saturdays to complete all the lessons. I will try to summarize the PMBOK and my class materials, and publish it here for the benefits of those who wanted to take PMP.

I plan to take and “hopefully” can pass the exam before middle of April, 2009 and that is my target. Currently I have 3 study partners that also plan to take the exam almost the same time as me. Anyone else wishes to join our group can email me at gainxs@hotmail.com.

From what I understood, my model is based on a older version of Popcorn Hour A-110 which is also based on the same Networked Media Tank (NMT) platform.

Opening the package

I got mine with a 1TB WD hard disk. In the package:

The built quality is bad, after installing the HDD, I have “forced” the screws in to closed the cover

Before installing the HDD

I connect it to my Panasonic 37” LCD with the provide HDMI. On first power on, the set was trying searching/loading the system and after a couple of minutes, I call the support and was told that I need to press “TV Source” and “0” to set it to auto detect, else I need to connect it to a VGA.

Once on, I when to the setup to configure it to auto-detect.

I was happy with the quality of the software and ease of use. I so far only tested watching some HD movies and used the podcasts.

I upgraded to the latest DZHK3 last week and after using over the last few days, my experience as follows:

a. the battery is draining much faster then before upgrading. It seems like something always running at the background and my unit is always warm

b. the alarm did not go off on several occasion (bad... make me missed several football match)

c. the bluetooth connection is much better as the interference between my headset is less (much be the bluetooth that drain the battery)

d. I installed a program called Lightsaber (thanks, Ivan) and is great for Star Wars fan but not much used.

You can change the color of your light saber, when you swing your "saber" (your omnia), can have the feeling of swinging a light saber. My son loves it.

e. Rush Hour is a great game. Is the same as the boardgame and great for killing time.

Samsumg Omnia – ROM Update (DZHK3)

What is that? You may asked. Well that is (or are) my wireless keyboard and mouse bought today from Challenger.

Why wireless keyboard and mouse?

Well, now that I have a 37" LCD TV, so is time to enjoy "BIG" screen. I connected my Asus G2P to my LCD and I have a huge screen. So need to sit further back therefore I need a wireless keyboard and mouse.

The keyboard is slim and is a keyboard. Keys are nice to type and the mouse is a mouse. The wheel is a little sensitive. Other than that is working fine. I will try to play some game using the keyboard, mouse and the large screen.

My Omnia Experience

This is a mystery case, wonder why I never upload this blog. Anyway, better late then never.

Omnia means everything and this is the name for Samsung latest phone. It is also known as the iPhone killer.

That’s the marketing speech. Let’s get down to business on the phone features.

The box looks small, well not much to say about the box. My set comes with the luxury items such as leather casing (more on that later), 2 stylus, screen protector.

Samsung is slightly taller and wider then the Sony-ericson K850.

Features:

The phone is using Windows Mobile 6.1. Samsung include TouchWiz. A widget in the Today screen which make it feels like iPhone. After 2 days of using it, I revert to Samsung scale down TouchWiz as it lighter to the OS.

Song/MP3/Video/DiVX

Omnia can play in 2 ways, first the Windows Media Player and the other is Samsung Touch player. Both more or less have the same features, so nothing to shout. Sound are decently good on my iTech Stereo Bluetooth. Another good feature of Mobile 6.1 is that the Bluetooth can automatically sent 0000 or 8888 to all Bluetooth headset, so you just need to pair the devices and Mobile 6.1 take cares of the communication and password.

GPS

Singapore version comes with Mapking which means it comes with Singapore and some major cities of Malaysia (so far tested on Johor and Kuala Lumpur). Point to take note: You need to change the map from Singapore to Malaysia should you cross the border (the car GPS can automatically change the maps without human intervention).

On the first start-up of the GPS, the lock on to the GPS can takes up to 15 minutes depending on location. However once lock on, the next start or cold start of GPS only takes a few seconds. The Mapking and my Holux GPS shows me about the same route from the Woodland Customs to Sengkang.

Camera

Omnia house a 5MP camera with auto face and smile detection. I quite like the smile detection feature as you only need to smile and the camera will snap the photo. Another great feature of the camera is the panorama feature, the photos will be automatically stitch so you do not need additional software for panorama photos. The final and last useful feature is the auto-tagging of GPS data into the photo. Once the GPS is lock on to the satellite, a small satellite will appear on the camera screen. After taking the photos the data will be included in the photo. In the thumbnail, a small earth icon will be display on the photos to indicate the photo been tag with GPS data. The data is store in the EXIF section of the photo.

Phone

The phone is normal Samsung phone features and also inherited all the bad things from other Samsung phone, the key weakness of Samsung phone was the reception and Omnia is bad when the MRT is moving. When you change the broadcast channel, the signal can drop to almost zero. But overall is a good phone.

Browsing

I quite like Opera 9.5 web browsing as compare to Internet Explorer. The one hand surfing is great and the speed is also fast if you running on HSDPA (the icon is 3G+). Another interesting feature of browsing is when you use Google Map, the map automatically zoom into you location. This is not the GPS signal but the phone provide broadcast station, so you can track you location using Google Map.

Summary

With 16GB and one hand touch/surf/usage, is almost everything I need.

Bad:

Everything that I touched has/have some bad experience and Omnia is no different. One the first day of using I “lost” the 16GB storage, but after resetting a couple of times, the storage comes back by itself. During the new toys phase, the battery last me half day of heavy usage, but now the battery can last me one day, so this is great improvement as compare to N95 (which during new toy phase only last me 1 hours with wifi, GPS, MP3 on)

After installation of the rack and TV, the next best thing is to watch some movies on DVD and with the standard RCA cable that comes with my DVD shows some grain on my new Panansonic 27" LCD TV.

So I when out to buy a better cable and found Monster. I purchase the THX Standard Composite Video AV Kit. It comes in 3 cables to send colour signal. The colour coded band on each cable for simple and error-free hookup. As per the guide:

Besta TV Rack from iKea

We bought the Besta TV Rack from iKea to put my new 37" LCD TV. The staff at iKea told me the rack can hold LCD TV up to 42". After shopping for lots of TV rack we found that the Besta TV rack is suitable for our same place as it also complement our book rack which is also the same range from iKea.

Build the rack was quite easy as the instruction was straight forward as the guide is clear. It took me about an hour to assemble it and is fun.

As mention earlier, it is perfect fit to my existing book racks.The good thing about the TV rack is that all the cable can be hidden at the back of the rack.

Surprise... That I put write on this topic as I am not really a cameraphone guy. The cameraphone (regardless of number of pixel, type of lens) is point-and-shoot and cannot compare to my other camera. BUT I do found some good usage of it, provided you point it at the right things.

Lately I quite forgetful on things (inspired by the movie Momento - about a man suffering from short-term memory loss uses his parariod camera to snap events to help him remember... you can find out more of the story from IMBD), so I start taking photos of:

Where you parked Now where’d you leave the car? B1? D4? If only you’d taken a photo of the nearest signpost, and maybe a few landmarks to boot. Take it from us: Losing your car in a crowded lot — especially when your boss insist in going in your car— is not fun.
Your credit card,
passport and/or driver’s license If one of these documents goes missing while you’re traveling, you’re potentially screwed. Before you embark, take a snapshot of your license and/or passport, making sure the numbers are legible. If nothing else, you’ll have an easier time proving your identity and getting your documents replaced.
Your hotel room number Sounds nuts, I know, but remember: Hotels no longer put room numbers on room keys. If you’re the forgetful type, this beats stopping at the front desk to ask for your own room number.
The label on the wine bottle A client raves about the bottle of wine you shared over dinner. Snap a photo of the label (when he/she’s not looking, of course) so you can match it later, then send along a bottle (or even a case, if it’s a big client) to help seal the deal.
Exotic food or art You need to turn of the flash to take the photo of the art and the name/explanation at the bottom of it in the museum.
Business card scanner This is one of the best features of all Omnia. You snap a photo of the name card and it OCR it, no need to type it into outlook.

I was officially confirmed by my company today (www.ecnet.com). Is been six months since I joined ECnet as Senior Product Manager. So far, I think I performed as per expectation.

In NYK (my last job), I do less work but much happier. I am happy at ECnet but something is still missing. Not too sure what is the missing piece. Can't complaint about the salary as it is what I excepted during the interview, so what is missing?

In term of work, I able to get into it fast as I already have the experience and know-how to perform the job. In term of education, I guessed I am able to catch up with the work so not the education too. In term of colleague, some are fun, some are serious, some are great, so is not the work relationship too. Hmmmm........ so what is missing?

Maybe I missed the smell of new cars but now I have more projects to keep me occupied to miss anything.

Comparing Omnia with Canon EF50 and EF-S 18-85mm (with Marco filter)

I took the same space marines with my trusted Canon and with the following lens - EF50 and EF-S 18-85mm with Marco filter.

What is the macro filter:

The outcome from 50mm (this is actually the eye-level lens)

and from the 18-85mm with macro filter at 85mm

at 56mm

Conclusion, I think I will be using the 18-85mm with macro filter more. Next project...... is to photograph my whole collections of all my Warhammer stuff.

The following programs are not compatible with the new rom HH3 update:

a. Microsoft Reader

b. Currency Convertor

I guessed both program using the older mobile .NET framework as when I tried to install the .NET framework, it said the newer framework is already installed.

Other interesting info is that the www.onemotoring.com.my on the traffic camera can't be loaded, not sure why. Before upgrading, I can view the traffic cam. The updated rom still cannot play WMA on touch player but you can play it using Windows Media (so not a big deal).

As for web scrolling with media playing in the background, the scrolling becomes too slow. Might be caused by my bluetooth headset, have not tried on the wired headset.

Other features found:

a. The main menu nows come with 2 page and one shortcuts page. You cannot change the mainmenu links but you can add/remove links from the shortcut.

b. GPS detection is now faster from cold start before it takes about 10 to 15 minutes (while moving) and nows is about 5 to 10 minutes (while moving)

c. Smart Reader still the same but notice the OCR is a little faster (no time tested as do not have the previous testing timing), just guts feeling.

I upgraded my Omnia to the latest ROM and also downloaded SPB Mobile Shell v 2.1, With SPB you have the HTC style ease of use TODAY screen and power of Omnia.

With SPB you have the following at one glance:

a. Battery level
b. Summary of events such as SMS, missed called, emails and signal strength
c. Weather and digital/analog clock - when you press the clock, you will alarms and other time zone. The weather will give you weekly weather forecast
d. You also have all you appointment in the Today

Beside the above, you can also make calls or close it to go back to Omnia Today screen.

So far, it is behaving as stated in the manual. Will try more features today such as menu customisation, etc. More review after a few more days of usage.

Motorola S9 Review

Motorola S9 Active Bluetooth Headset

Package:

I got the David Beckham set which comes with the headset, travelling charger, carrying case, extra ear bud and exercise armband carrying case (can fit my Samsung Omnia and most MP3). I guess the armband carry case is more for iPod Touch.

Usage:

The headset is very light and very comfortable to wear as compare to my old iTech headset, is like wearing nothing. When wearing my old iTech, you can feel the heat as it covers the entire ear.

Buttons:

- Left: The controls are volume up/down (denotes with -/+) and answer call or talk buttons

- Right: You have the Prev/Next button and sitting in the middle is the Play/Pause/Stop

The buttons are soft touch, which means that you need to just feel it and is touch. Each touch will be acknowledged with a beep. You must get used to the position as all buttons are cramp into a very small place so those with big fingers might touch the wrong buttons.

Built quality:

The set is very light and comfortable to wear. However, those with bigger head might find it a little uncomfortable. Pairing the device with my Samsung Omnia is piece of cake, just press the Answer button on S9 and search it on the Omnia, the rest is handle by Omnia. On the Nokia, you might need to key in the passcode.

Bad news: S9 does not pair with other MP3 bluetooth dongle such as iTech, however you can pair it with TEN iPod dongle. I have sent my problems to Motorola and hopefully they can give me an answer (more update on this once I have a solution)

Sound wise is normal with a flat bass, I guess it might be my phone. As for music, you can hear soft music even in noisy environment. I set my phone volume to 60% and the sound from S9 is hearable.

Making calls is easy, just dial and when connected you will hear it on the left speaker. Not sure why the right speaker is mute…. Maybe another question for Motorola. I am not sure where the mic is but you just need to talk normally, however the receiver did complaint that my voice is a little soft and lots of background voice (I am trying it on the train).

Summary:

- Pro: Light and comfortable, easy to use, good for active lifestyle

- Con: Cannot connect to Bluetooth dongle. Buttons too small.

A day in the port with my family

On the 20th June, 2008, we had a different kind of outing. This is part of my son (Shao Heng) school project. The project is called Follow Parent To Work.

Since that I have resigned, I called Mr Lingam of my ex-company to help me in arranging the visit to the port.

The plan was to visit one of the world largest RORO (Roll On/Roll Off) vessel. In this case, it is the Leader class vessel. However due to some timing issues, we only manage to board the smaller version of the Leader class.

After lunch, is rapid shooting..... Our boat, please be warned that you will be totally wet. So camera and electronic devices better keep in water proof bags.

Not much photos as we are wet and my water proof bag fails. At the Orang Asli or Aboriginal Settlement. We were shown how to make darts for blow pipe and fire (the nature way).

The Jungle Adventure (Taman Negara) - Part One

How to go to Taman Negara: We drive (the journey took us about 3 hours . The road from Kuala Lumpur to Temerloh is about 1.5 hours (distance about 120KM).

At the exit for Temerloh toll, we turn right to Jerantut (turn left is to take boat into Taman Negara). From the toll exit into Taman Negara is about 1.5 hours.

Make sure you have plenty of petrol in your car as not petrol station seen along the way.

Getting a new job

Continuing from the resigning from the job, the next step is to get a job.

Here are some of my experience during my job in interviewing and recruiting new staff. Now is my turn to look for a job, so I must now step into the other side of the table. Hopefully my experiences will help me in getting a new job.

Getting a job requires a few important steps even you have someone recommending you to the new company.

Step 1: Your resume

Resume or CV is extremely important for the reviewer to understand your experiences and level of educations. Some reviewer looks at the photo before reading the resume.

As for myself, I prefer to read every resume (to be fair to everyone), however, sometimes is just impossible to do so. When I have more (trust me a lot more than I have the time to read), I will go directly into the experience section, I try to match the job with the experience of the candidate. I will shortlist all those that matches the job specification.

So for my turn, I looked at my old resume and notice that it looks like one of the resume of all the candidate that I have read so far. In short, it is the same as everyone.

I decided to have a resume makeover. During the course of my last few years of working, I have improve a lot on my presentation. So I decided to make my resume more like a presentation. Instead of the normal using Word, I used Powerpoint. I make the contents and then every jobs comes with projects and achievements.

This way I hope that I have assisted the reader to understand me more. This is very important, if the reader like you, the chances of being call for interview is also very high.

Step 2: Applying the job

I have tried using job site but find it difficult to get any hit (being chosen for interview). So I try the more direct approach, apply direct to the company advertise in the jobsite or newspaper.

Back to my time when we need staff, the HR department will put the ads into jobsite, newspaper and sometime engage employment agencies.

Employment agencies sometimes sent candidates that below par, so we usually go thru the more traditional ways, reading CV that responded to the newspaper.

We sometime asked our network for suitable candidate. This is also extremely helpful if you have a strong network of friends that willingly recommend you for the job.

I now using my contacts and applying position in the newspaper. The Saturday Straits Times is a very useful resources to understand the job market.

Step 3: Interview

When I interview, I will try my best to understand the candidate characters before asking for his story on his working experience. This is important because the candidate if employ will be working with me and if our characters does not match, I guess it is quite unlikely we going to work well together.

So if you are chosen for the interview, ask he/she going to be your boss. If yes, you must also check his/her characters too. This will give you a basic understanding of what how he/she operate.

During interview, please be honest because this is something I hated when the candidate make story or enlarge certain parts of his/her work experiences. The interviewer will ask the same question in various ways, if you not telling the true then your story will end up many version, so your chances of second interview will be gone.

During the first interview (if the first interview is the owner or decision makers then is different story), try not to go too hard on your new salary.

Your job during the first interview is to impress the interviewer so that you be called for next interview. During the second interview, meaning you are among the chosen one for the job. This is the time you have to answer all the questions to his/her liking.

Step 4: Negotiating the terms

If the job you applying is a replacement of someone, then the salary structure have been establish, so your request of higher salary will depends on how good are you.

Basic rules, your new salary should be at least 20-30% of your current salary and also the perks that comes with the position.

There are times you can ask for extremely high salary but do understand that your new salary will reflect the among of work you have to put in for your new job.

Step 5: Accepting the contract

The best part of the interview is when the interviewer said you are the chosen one, the special one or the one, so is time to call in the contract.

You can either accept it on the spot or take it back to digest it before accepting it. You can verbally agreed to accept the position but pending your confirmation from the understanding of your new contract.

It is important to understand your new job scopes, company rules, etc before accepting it (of course, if you already knew the company then by all means accept it on the spot).

The reason of not accepting it on the spot is very simple, they may match the salary that you asking for but they might add in some clauses that you might agree (at the heat of the moment) but do not like it later (example allowances, if they promise they must be in the offer letter, it will be nasty when you don't received it when you get your first paycheck).

So don't worry about cooling period (your re-consideration time - I usually give 2-3 days). During the cooling period, do ask around regarding the new company, the always some disgruntled staff that will tells you the dark side of the company. If it is a replacement then they must be reason why he/she leaves the company. If it is so good, you will not be in the company as no one resign. (That is another story -- maybe later, I might write something on dark side of a company)

Step 6: Starting the new job

This is hard as I have not move to any company since 4 years ago. Even when I join my current company (as of 5th May, 2008 - those who knew me will know which company I am referring too), I already knew my bosses and some of my new working mates.

Resigning from job

I signed a new offer from a new company (more to come later) and thereby will have to submit my resignation letter to my current company.

The problem was that I love my current company and my previous boss. He still in the company but transferred to another country. However, I feels that the new boss (already 3 years in Singapore) and my immediate boss do not know the best way to manage me.

Maybe is due to different focus or direction. So I decided to look for new job and found it.

The new company is a software house with products in SCM, etc.

How to write a resigning letter

I think the resignation letter should be simple and direct. The few main points are:

Inform the company you are resigning
The last day of work unless you want to leave early
Thanking your boss and company

I don't think adding reason of changing job in the resignation letter serve any purpose as I am resigning, it may be due to job, boss, work, increment, etc.

Once decided to resign, I can only say all the best to the company, my boss and my future.

After 4 years in current company, I think I am very comfortable in the company structure and policies. To move out from the comfort zone requires some courage and luck.

Luck is because I still do not know the culture of the new company. So to fit in to the new culture and place need some times to adapt. I hope I don't bring any of my cultural shock to them. As for shock from them, I guess I am pretty sure I can fit it.

Anyhow, it is going to be a new challenge.

I did spoke to my old boss telling him that he going to be missed and I still have not fully thank him yet.

Since the 8th March election, things doesn't look good to the BN government.The BN is not doing enough to control the damages and with the Umno in fighting, there is more suffering to the rakyat.

As rakyat, we only wish who ever in the government to run it more professionally. Something started to be implemented such as the ACA but no detail plan on how ACA will become like ICAC of Hong Kong. The only plan was to increase the manpower.

During the election, a lot of rakyat not very happy with the election commission, why not start with the EC to ensure that they did not do anything wrong during the election. This will make the rakyat trust the government more.
